This program touches many different areas from volcanoes, to villages, to the Cano Negro wildlife, to the dry northern regions, ocean sunsets and rich mangroves.
Departure from Calgary, Alberta (or alternate departure city subject to pricing) to San Jose.Airport transfer for overnight at Parque de Lago Hotel.
Drive to Arenal volcano and stop en route at the cultural jewel of San Ramon with its markets and rich heritage. We will then visit the town of La Fortuna with a stop at the nearby waterfall for a swim in clear water (and photo opportunity).Overnight at Arenal Paraiso Hotel. (B,D)
Day 3 We leave for Cano Negro wildlife tour with an an abundance of birdlife (full day tour). This evening visit ecotermales hotsprings. Overnight at Arenal Paraiso Hotel (B,L,D)
This morning we will see Arenal Volcano National Park with a guided tour early morning (5-6 AM!) then drive to a typical Costa Rican town in Liberia. Spend the afternoon taking pictures at local parks and of people, local markets and architecture and continue to Rincon de la Vieja area. Overnight at Rincon de la Vieja lodge. (B, D)
After breakfast visit 3 sections of Rincon de la Vieja National Park, one of the most diverse parks in the country located in an area where 3 vegetative zones meet. Then in the afternoon, drive to La Cruz lookout for an excellent chance at landscape shots and a brillian Guanacaste sunset.(B, L, D)
Mid morning drive to Nicoya, stop en route at Palo Verde highly recommended for birdwatchers and photographers. Overnight at Ensenada Lodge Wildlife Refuge. This is another ideal location for our photo shoot.The farm of 800 acres is dedicated to cattle and horses and to salt and hay production. Since 1977 they have been working in defending what has been declared a "national refuge for fauna" and includes the mangrove zones at the end of the Abangares River. The area is very important because it has one of the last primary and secondary forests of the northern Puntarenas province.They have developed a three step reforestation program:
- a natural return to the forest environmnent, degraded by previous cattle ranching
- planting of local species in selected areas
- planting of adaptable introduced species
Today more than 30% of the farm is covered by forests which helps to maintain the natural habitat. (B, D)

At noon, we will drive back to San Jose stopping along the way where a photo shoot opportunity presents itself. Overnight at the Ensenada. (B)
Free day in San Jose to explore this interesting city and take pictures of a Costa Rican urban setting. Optional cultural show and dinner this evening.
Transfer to airport and flight back to Calgary (or alternate city)
